WHAT DOES OUR LIVER DO ?

  • Liver filters toxins from blood.
  • Production of bile, which helps carry away waste and helps to digest fats.
  • Production of certain proteins for blood plasma
  • Storing sugar for energy.
  • Turning extra glucose to glycogen.
  • Regulating blood clotting
  • Resisting infections by making immune factors.
  • Conversion of poisonous ammonia to urea - urea is end product of protein metabolism and excreted in urine.
  • Liver processes hemoglobin for use of its iron content - the liver stores iron.

LIVER DISEASE PROGRESSION

Liver disease progression typically follows four stages:

Inflammation (Hepatitis):

This is the initial stage where the liver becomes inflamed due to various factors like viral infections, alcohol abuse, or autoimmune conditions. The liver may enlarge, and some individuals might experience tenderness on the right side of the abdomen and abdominal discomfort but many have no symptoms. Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests can indicate inflammation.

Fibrosis:

Prolonged inflammation leads to the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis) as the liver attempts to repair itself. This scar tissue can replace healthy liver tissue and restrict blood flow.

Cirrhosis:

In cirrhosis, the scarring becomes extensive, replacing healthy liver tissue with fibrous tissue. Monitoring for complications like variceal bleeding , ascites and hepatic encephalopathy is crucial.

End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD):

This is the end stage, also known as chronic liver failure where the liver has severely deteriorated, and is unable to perform its vital functions.
